How Do They Sleep At Night?
Another Monday morning boot-up, and in floods another weekend's worth of hype and hysteria.
You've seen them, right?
A quick survey of the Subject lines or the opening lines doesn't interest me one iota.
Isn't there something here that can spark my interest?
Delete, delete, and delete.
How much of this spam and scam can we stand? Is anyone getting tired of this besides me?
What's even more amazing is that so many people are still doing this. Are there some people out there that are actually clicking through on this stuff? Are there really people who believe that you can actually "get rich quick", or is that bit of hype here for all eternity?
Who is teaching network marketers to do this ? and how do they sleep at night? Wouldn't you think that after awhile the message would come through that this isn't working anymore ? that people are beginning to catch on that they're being mislead?
Take a look at some of these "goodies" that we all see in email Subject lines and in classified ads:
"Make Up To $5,000 Or More Every Month"
"Fast Start to Big Dollars - No Selling - No Meetings - No Recruiting"
"Make Two Million Per Year"
"Explode Your Business"
"Earn Up To $25,000 Per Week"
"Quit Working and Get rich"
"Earn A Fortune - We'll Show You How"
"The Fastest $5,500 You've Ever Seen"
"Make Big Money Without A Downline"
If you do happen to look a little further, and read what the writers have to say, you generally will learn a couple of things:
They don't like to tell you who they are ? no names ? no phone numbers ? oftentimes not even a valid email address where you could send a reply to the person if you wanted to.
There is rarely any attempt to be friendly or to make you "feel at home".
Who would you rather do business with ? a warm body or a cold fish?
The business of Network Marketing, (and I want to stress the word "business"), is about relationships. Most people will feel more like doing business with you if you put a friendly hand out to them. The way people present themselves in their advertising and in their emails is almost frigid. The messages are void of any human personality at all.
Wouldn't it be much better if after reading something that was written to you, you would feel like punching the air and letting out a big "YESSS!!" ? and the reason you did this was because the person who wrote to you was telling you an honest story and was relating to you as a fellow human being?
If only there was some level of understanding that our industry needs more focus on relationship building. When I read some of the "hype" that is in advertising, postcards, direct and email proposals, I feel sort of like a huge wallet or purse. I'm no longer a person, but rather I'm treated only as a
source of possible, potential income to the writer. Beyond that, I get no sense whatsoever that the person writing to me has any intention of developing a sound, business relationship.
I know that there are many of you that feel the same about this "proliferation of hype".
Is there anything that can be done to, at least, begin to curtail it?
I believe there is something that can be done. However, it's going to be a long, slow process. Why?
Because there are multitudes of people who still believe the hype. Those same multitudes of people won't find out about the "lie" until much later. By that time they are so turned off on our industry that no amount of sincere relationship building will turn them around.
However, we have to start somewhere. We have to get the word out that there really is a better way.
There is no doubt that people will be much more likely to want to do business with someone they know and trust, right?
When you are in communication with potential business partners, doesn't it make more sense to sound professional, competent, helpful and likeable?
As Network Marketers, we are constantly fighting an uphill battle to get people to allow us into their space. That battle has to be fought because most people have learned to be afraid of us. They've heard about all the people who have been scammed into this or that program, so they're scared to death that we're going to do the same thing. Approaching them from the position of hype is exactly the wrong way to go about changing the image.
It is the leaders in our industry that must lead the way to change our image.
It is the leaders in our industry that must begin to educate others on using a more non-invasive approach when we are contacting potential partners.
It is the leaders in our industry that must begin to show that building a relationship with our prospective partners has to come BEFORE the invitation to partnership.
If we build a relationship first ? and we show genuine interest in the people we meet ? trust will follow. Once trust and friendship is in place, the partnership can flourish. Everyone involved will have an understanding of the expectations on both sides of the partnership, and a long-term relationship can happen.
Without this, all we will be doing is fighting a constant battle of attrition in our organizations.
Some of the leaders in our industry have taken a major first step. They have formed the Discover MLM University. This University is a combination of off-line and on-line "lessons" to help promote the education of people that are seeking to enter our Network Marketing world, as well as those who are already in it. These lessons are offered absolutely free of charge, free of hype, free of any pitch to join this or join that.
The lessons will cover a wide range of topics, all geared to helping people learn what to look for, and look out for, in Network Marketing. No specific Network Marketing companies are ever discussed.
As I said, this is a major first step.
